Friday, February 28, 2020 2:00:00 PM EST - 3:00:00 PM EST
Brittany will be sharing some of her experiences as a Mi’kmaq woman, growing up in Scarborough, and becoming active with the Urban Indigenous Community. Brittany will be sharing her experi-ences and knowledge of Indigenous Law and Legal Traditions in Kanata. Starting with an under-standing of the pre-colonial legal context and moving forward chronologically to early Treaties and the Royal Proclamation, she will then move to the development of Canadian Law as we know it and specifically Section 35 of the Constitution Act. Finally, she will turn to recent developments and decisions in Canadian Law with respect to Indigenous Law. She will share some stories and experiences with how Indigenous Law is developing, and what changes are being made to decolonize institutions, introduce Indigenous legal pedagogy, and create space for Indigenous peoples and perspectives.
